Lily Collins Isn't So Innocent In 'Writers' Sep 14th 2012, 22:01 Lily Collins has made a living out of playing the doe-eyed ingenue in films like "Mirror Mirror," but audiences shouldn't expect a similarly sweet-as-pie protagonist in the upcoming film "Writers." In fact, when we sat down with Lily recently at the Toronto International Film Festival (her first!), she let it be known that her character, Samantha, is a bit of a minx. The film follows a family through one tumultuous year in which they experience plenty of romantic ups and downs. For Lily, "Writers" is the "most meaningful story" she's filmed thus far, due in large part to her character's fully fleshed-out arc. "She puts it all out there. She puts it on the line at the beginning of the story," Lily said. "She's very black and white. There's no in between. There's no gray area. She doesn't believe in love because of what she's seen in her parents, and she's very tainted in that sense." As you'd expect, her storied past leads to a few unwise decisions in the present. "With her, it's all about guys, but not in the warm, loving sense," Lily explained. "It's very, just, take me or leave me now, or I'm going to move on to the next guy. Samantha just needs to be taken care of, but what I love about the story is that she starts out as that girl...but it's not a cliched version of that character. [Writer/director] Josh [Boone] did such a great job writing her in a way that you still feel for her, and she's not this character that you don't like automatically because of her actions, but she grows into a character who ends up finding love in a place where she never imagined with someone who she always would have laughed at at a bar. It's not her type at all, but she learns to accept herself through this guy and, in turn, find love. It was fun to play an arc like that." "Writers," which also stars Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly and Logan Lerman, is slated to open sometime next year. Does "Writers" intrigue you?

So, which extracurricular activities should the offbeat friends have presented to that crappy assembly instead? Here are five organizations we could see Neil, Jay and the gang diving into: Spanish Club: Because it's Simon's perfect excuse to refer to Carly as "Mami" and take her on a tapas date! Paris may be the most romantic city in the world, but Spain's the birthplace of...Sangria. Improv Club: Simply put, you can get away with anything onstage. And, unlike studying, mackin' on chicks or getting a non-embarrassing after-school job, it's something these animated guys might actually excel at. Lastly, a starring role in a play nearly guarantees a lip-lock with the leading lady. Drum Circle Club: OK, so chicks won't be so into this, but we have a sneaking suspicion that Neil could play a mean djembe. Sure, both movies star Kirsten Dunst and feature high-stepping of the highest order, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. Apparently, though, someone forgot to tell a group of fans lined up outside the film's Toronto premiere, because as Kiki tried to tell MTV News' Josh Horowitz about her most recent screening of the Jack Kerouac adaptation, a round of Tony Basil's "Mickey" (which you may remember from a certain cheertastic flick) broke out. For her part, Kirsten seemed to get a kick out of the sing-a-long, enthusing, "I love it!" with a big grin on her face. We kind of love it too, Kirsten. But back to more serious issues! Such as when Kirsten first happened upon the Beatnik novel. "I first encountered it because I had a crush on a boy, and it was his favorite book, so I read it because of him," she said. Now, we've sampled our fair share of questionable pop culture attempting to get our flirt on with a member of the opposite sex, so one could do much worse than an iconic novel beloved by so many. The Season 6 trailer demonstrates just how far the New Jersey housemates have come, progressing from strangers to friends and, finally, family. It won't be all hugs and rainbows, though--by the looks of things, there's plenty of signature guido-drama to come with Deena's arrest and the ongoing battle between Nicole and Sitch.
