Considering how successfully he navigated the mind-bending wildness of a digital universe in "Tron: Legacy," you wouldn't think that Garrett Hedlund could be thrown for a loop by any cinematic setting—but according to the actor, entering the world of "On the Road" has been a heck of a mind-trip. Check it: Garrett sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz to discuss his role in the film, and he's still so psyched to be a part of it, he just can't wrap his head around the fact that it's really, really real.
"I still can't believe we're here right now, even talking about 'On the Road,'" he confessed.
Like many of the actors in the film, Garrett's connection began with the seminal beatnik-era story and bloomed from there.
"I read the book when I was 18," he told us. And though he was immediately interested when he discovered that "On the Road" was on its way to the big screen, he didn't have high hopes for being a part of it.
"I was going to high school in Arizona," he remembered. "I said, I'll never get a chance at this. But I was just a silly kid in high school...and then, six years later, we all found ourselves on set."
And while Garrett says that the experience of making the movie has been such a surreal delight that he still needs to be pinched from time-to-time (in which case, hey, can we volunteer?), he also confessed that the best part came from fully immersing himself in the world of the book—including meeting the children of Neal Cassady, who inspired the character of Dean.
"I had a notebook filled with questions," he said. "I'm a sucker for that stuff."
