Savvy readers long-expected to see Elena Gilbert (SPOILER ALERT!) made-over with fangs on "The Vampire Diaries," as that's a storyline that played out in the young-adult novel source material. But the brilliant creators behind the show spent three seasons lovingly squeezing every bit of pre-vampire life out of young Ms. Gilbert before arriving at that particular point. Now, with season four kicking off next month, there's so much story to explore as Elena transitions and the aftereffects are felt by Stefan, Damon and the rest of Mystic Falls.
But some shows have a habit of overstaying their welcome. "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter has recently started talking about wrapping up after season seven, which gives him an "end game" in sight from a story point of view. Meanwhile, "Prison Break" was always planned for "prison" in season one and "on the run" in season two. So they had to come up with new ideas for seasons three and four. More than a few fans complained that "Lost" didn't seem to have things planned out far enough in advance. So is there an end game in sight for "TVD"?
Speaking with MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she was promoting "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," Nina Dobrev had this to say:
"I always like it when a show ends on a good note. I don't like anything to be dragged out past the point of quality. 'Cause I think you can only tell a story so long until it gets kind of watered down. Every show that I've enjoyed has made it to the sixth season and put a conclusion to it." So how long will "The Vampire Diaries" last? "I don't know. We'll see. It all depends on the story."
When the show returns, we'll see not only the ramifications of Elena's new undead life, but also of the choice she finally made between Salvatores at the end of season three. Where will everyone stand on, well, everything? From what we've seen and what the cast has been telling us since San Diego Comic-Con, Stefan wants to stop the transition, Bonnie has her own somewhat twisted plan, Damon thinks it's inevitable, plus he's blaming Matt, to boot. Tyler is still possessed by Klaus, who seems to be using the opportunity to make out with Caroline. There's more than one Original vampire kicking around but some new cast members too, including Phoebe Tonkin from "The Secret Circle."
We don't really want to think about the end game for "The Vampire Diaries." We want October 11 to hurry up and get here! The season four premiere is called "Growing Pains," which will be followed by "Memorial" on October 18. Quite the tantalizing titles!
How many seasons do you think "The Vampire Diaries" should last? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!
