'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: 'Crazy'
Jul 25th 2012, 15:22

Spencer and Jason unwittingly helped clear Garrett of at least one murder charge last week when they uncovered Ali's blood-splattered anklet in an antique store. But if the DNA doesn't belong to the former cop, whose is it? Detective Wilden had one suspect on last night's "Pretty Little Liars" — namely Hanna, whose blood type matched the murderer's, but lab work would be needed to find out if it was a DNA match. Luckily, Hanna's mom was out of town and unable to accompany her daughter, which meant no test for now. That didn't make Hanna feel any better, though, because if we know anything about A, he/she is a master at planting evidence.

But just in case we (or the liars) forgot that fact, A sent a reminder in the form of a finger-pricking Ouija board planchette that Hanna had buried with Ali. "See how easy it is for me to get your blood," the accompanying note read.

Hanna flashed back to one of the last times she'd used the board. It had been in the aftermath of Ali's disappearance. She and Mona were playing (on a dark and stormy night, naturally) and asked where the missing girl was. The planchette spelled out A-L-I-V-E as thunder clapped, lightning struck and Hanna saw Ali standing on the porch. Or at least she thought she did. She was sure enough at the time that she called Mrs. DiLaurentis and told her as much. Three days later, Ali's body was found, and Mr. DiLaurentis will never forgive Hanna for giving his wife false hope.

In light of the planchette's return (and since Hanna is on the banned list at Radley), Aria decided to visit Mona to see what she could tell them about A. "So would you like to play a game?" Mona asked coyly after Aria arrived. As the watching nurse scurried off to get Mona's meds, Aria finally laid her cards on the table (metaphorically). She asked Mona pointedly whether she was working with A. Mona denied that she had anything to do with digging up Ali's grave and told Aria to apologize to Hanna.

Of course, Hanna couldn't leave it at that, so along with Aria, she broke into the mental institution later that night. After recalling the time Mr. DiLaurentis yelled at Hanna, Mona went all kinds of crazy (hence the episode's title), escaping her room for the creepy children's ward and babbling nonsense. Or at least it seemed like nonsense, but as Hanna recalled their secret mnemonic language ("She Lives Under Trees" = "Slut"), she came to realize Mona was sending her a message. "No One To Save Ali From Evil" translated to "Not Safe." But who's not safe, Mona or the liars? Another of Mona's messages lead the girls to a password-protected website about Maya. What secrets does it hold?

Mona wasn't the only one stirring up trouble in Rosewood this week. There was a new girl in town, CeCe, who knew Ali from Cape May and had even dated Jason for a short time. She works in the shop across from Emily's coffee shop and seemed to already know all the girls' secrets. Creepy. Emily later took Maya's cousin, Nate, to the store to buy a belated birthday present for his date Jenna, where she had a heart-to-heart with CeCe about telling Nate the truth about Jenna. After Em's intervention went awry, CeCe called Jenna pretending to be Nate's girlfriend, essentially squelching the relationship before it even began. We'll need to keep our eyes on this one.

Spencer had her hands full this episode, too, asking her mom to get an injunction against the warrant for Hanna's blood test. She also basically was an accomplice in Jason's booze-fueled hit-and-run. So there's that.

And in Middle-Aged Mating News: Pastor Ted appears to be the only 40-something bachelor in Rosewood (besides Byron, of course) because he ended up on a date last night, not with Ashley but with Aria's mom, Ella! But he eats his ice cream just like Byron (spooning the sides and leaving a big hunk in the middle), so Ella wasn't sure he could be her Mr. Right. But the owner of the coffee shop where Emily works was looking mighty fine to Ella. After all, what girl would turn down free pastries?

What did you think of last night's "Pretty Little Liars"? Whose side is Mona on? Will the blood on the anklet prove to be Hanna's? How is Spencer going to talk her way out of Jason's accident? Tell us everything in the comments and on Twitter!
