Bret Easton Ellis No Longer In Running To Write 'Fifty Shades' Script
Aug 7th 2012, 16:05

Fifty Shades of GreyThis news has us feeling all kinds of "Fifty Shades of Grey." Novelist and prolific tweeter Bret Easton Ellis took to his feed early this morning to announce that he is no longer in the running to adapt E.L. James' best-selling novel for the big screen.

"It's a very major disappointment to announce that I've somehow been taken off the list of possible screenwriters for 'Fifty Shades of Grey,'" he wrote. "Thanks to the fans for the months of intense support. Your awesome enthusiasm and great suggestions were instructive and meaningful to me..."

Ellis has been vocal—to say the least—about his desire to tell the story of damaged billionaire Christian Grey and his naive paramour Anastasia Steele. In fact, it seemed at times that the "American Psycho" scribe was using his feed as a sort of workshop, soliciting casting recommendations and asking fans what they liked and didn't like about the S&M source material. He and "Vampire Diaries" actor Ian Somerhalder (a fan favorite for the role of Christian) even had a lively discussion via the social media site regarding the project.

I, for one, am disappointed to hear that Ellis will not be spending time in Christian's Red Room of Pain. The writer's unique, often dark sensibility would have elevated "Fifty Shades" into a taut psychological drama that would have been something to behold.

We're sad to say it, but laters, Bret.
