Gary Ross Will Direct 'Peter And The Starcatchers' Next
Aug 21st 2012, 17:12

Gary RossGary Ross has finally decided on his follow-up project to "The Hunger Games."

As had been previously speculated, Gary has chosen to adapt the Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson novel "Peter and the Starcatchers" next. Deadline has confirmed that Gary got the job, which means that he will be jumping back into the young adult genre again.

"Peter and the Starcatchers" serves as a prequel to "Peter Pan" and follows a young orphan named Peter as he befriends a girl named Molly who he meets on a ship called Never Land. The two of them set off on an adventure to find a trunk filled with mysterious magic "starstuff" that they need to discover before it falls into the hands of Black Stache, the pirate who later becomes Captain Hook.

"The Hunger Games" might have been the first young adult-focused movie that Gary has directed, but he has shown plenty of interest in making films for a younger audience in the past. He wrote the scripts for 1994's "Lassie" and 2008's "The Tale of the Despereaux," so "Peter and the Starcatchers" should be right up his alley. It's unclear if this movie will be as gritty as "The Hunger Games" was, but we hope that Ross brings over some of that realism when adapting this variation on the classic children's story.

Disney is currently waiting on a new draft of the "Peter and the Starcatchers" script that Jesse Wigutow wrote. The plan is to have the updated screenplay submitted by October, and Deadline reports that Gary hopes to have filming underway as early as 2013. Hopefully this is a project that is as close to his heart as "The Hunger Games" was, and he adapts it with as much love and care as he did that film.
