Do we have sparkly vampires to thank for actress Saoirse Ronan being cast as dual lead Melanie/Wanda in the Stephenie Meyer adaptation "The Host"? Sort of! When we caught up with the 18-year-old on the set of her upcoming alien invasion flick, she explained her history with the author's other best-selling supernatural story and how it informed her decision to be "The Host."

"I think everyone is familiar with 'Twilight' at this stage because it kind of took over the world there for a while," Saoirse said. "So I was familiar with her books, which I loved, and the movies as well, obviously, and I had heard that 'The Host' was being made into a film and read the script and thought the concept was so incredible, just the idea of inhabiting Earth to perfect it. That this was their goal—not to destroy it or really take it over, but just to perfect things and get rid of any negative emotion—was really intriguing to me, so then I read the book as well, and that was fantastic. It's huge. It's a big book."
Indeed it is, Saoirse. But, thankfully, the film has an expert adapter in screenwriter/director Andrew Niccol, who managed to repackage the work into a script that's didn't translate into a 14-hour film.
"He's obviously a fantastic writer," Saoirse enthused. "That's his strong point: to do mind-blowing concepts like that. He's very good at that sci-fi type of drama. We've all said that how he was able to condense 600-plus pages into a 120-page script is kind of amazing."
