My inner 13-year-old nearly peed her pants (wouldn't that have been awkward!) when the news broke back in July that "Pretty Little Liars" executive producer Marlene King would be adapting the movie "Now and Then" into a TV series for ABC Family. (If you're not up on your '90s trivia, Marlene wrote the screenplay for the coming-of-age film that now holds a special place in the hearts of women of a certain age.) So when I spoke with Marlene yesterday in anticipation of the "Pretty Little Liars" Halloween special (stay tuned for her preview on Monday!), I couldn't help but inquire after the series' status.
"We go on hiatus here November 15, and that's what my plan is during the hiatus, to really start working on that and really figure out how we're going to do that," she said.
And though the young actresses from the film—including Christina Ricci, Thora Birch and Gaby Hoffmann—are all grown up, the film's four best friends have only aged about four years in Marlene's mind.
"It's definitely the same characters, but it won't be the same time period," she explained of her approach. "It will be like if the adults were 40 now and the girls were teenagers. We'll probably pick it up when the girls are 16, but it will be in the 1980s as opposed to the '70s because that's sort of the 'then' of our current 'now.'"
With the project still in its earliest stages, casting isn't at the top of Marlene's to-do list—in fact, she's having a hard time picturing other actresses as Roberta, Teeny, Chrissy and Samantha.
"They're still those characters from the movie," she said. "I'll just think of them as four years later."
